ExxonMobil |
The
corporate entities that would become
Exxon and Mobil began the 20th
century as components of one
company. At the end of the century,
they came together as a single
premier organization. For most of
the years in between, they blazed
separate trails as independent,
competing enterprises. Each company
placed a singular imprint on the
energy industry and on a dynamic era
of world history.
In 1998,
Exxon and Mobil signed a definitive
agreement to merge and form a new
company called Exxon Mobil
Corporation. "This merger will
enhance our ability to be an
effective global competitor in a
volatile world economy and in an
industry that is more and more
competitive," said Lee Raymond and
Lou Noto, chairmen and chief
executive officers of Exxon and
Mobil, respectively. After
shareholder and regulatory
approvals, the merger was completed
November 30, 1999.

Meridian Associates, Inc. |

Betsi
Lueth Bixby and her company Meridian
Associates, Inc. currently assist
over 2,500 of this country’s
petroleum marketers increase cash
flow and profits through education,
strategic planning facilitation,
merger mediation, business valuation
and brokerage services and
software. Her message is one of
executable steps and core
competencies that every petroleum
marketer needs to know.
Betsi
has been the most widely read expert
in the industry for over a decade.
Through her monthly Money Matters
column published by the Petroleum
Marketers Association of America (PMAA)
and many state and regional
petroleum, c-store, and propane
associations, plus her own
subscription newsletter, The
Meridian Financial Advantage,
Betsi clarifies and simplifies
complicated subjects into concrete
step-by-step processes that
dramatically impact company
performance and profits. Betsi is
also a member of the National
Petroleum News (NPN) Editorial
Advisory Board.
A
financial sharp shooter, Betsi is
well known for the value she brings
to the industry:
“Attending Meridian’s Focus on
Finance each year has translated to
at least $350,000 annual savings at
our 42 million gallon jobbership”
says Ron King, CFO of R. V. Jensen.
Each year since 1992, hundreds of
marketers attend Betsi’s
hard-hitting three-day workshop, now
dubbed as “The Best Workshop in the
Industry.”
“Everyone should have Betsi value
their petroleum business,” says
Don Babb, former owner of Bolyn
Lubricants. “We had Betsi value
two acquisitions, plus our own
company. Each time she ended up
being right on target.” By
customer demand, Betsi began
Meridian’s highly successful
Valuation and Brokerage division in
late 1999. Betsi and Meridian
quickly earned a reputation for
accurate valuations and have
continued to achieve great success
facilitating highly confidential
sales of family-owned petroleum
companies.
With a
commercial banking background before
starting Meridian in 1991, Betsi saw
the need for industry-specific
financial analysis software that
would work seamlessly with all the
myriad of good general ledger
programs already used in the
industry. “We use CashTracker®
not just for internal analysis, but
also as a management reporting and
training tool. It’s indispensable”
says Kaye Thompson of E.J. Pope and
Sons.
With instant
acceptance of CashTracker® by the
industry, Betsi and Meridian went on
to solve another industry problem,
equipment tracking, with a second
innovative software product.
Originally designed to keep track of
loaned and leased petroleum
equipment, Equipment Tracker and a
similar product, Equipment Manager
for general asset tracking and
ticklers, now simplify what was once
a complicated and often neglected
task.

National Biodiesel
Board |
The
National Biodiesel Board is a
nonprofit trade association
dedicated to coordinating the
biodiesel industry and educating the
public about the fuel. Biodiesel is
a clean-burning, domestically
produced alternative fuel made from
fats or oils, like soybean oil, that
can be used in any diesel engine
with few or no modifications to the
engine. It can be used in its pure
form (B100), or blended with
petroleum diesel at any level—most
commonly 20% (B20). It is nontoxic,
biodegradable and essentially free
of sulfur and aromatics. It is also
the only alternative fuel to have
completed Health Effects testing
requirements of the Clean Air Act
Amendments of 1990. Biodiesel offers
similar fuel economy, horsepower and
torque to petroleum diesel while
providing superior lubricity. More
than 50 major fleets use biodiesel
and the fuel has been proven in more
than 30 million successful on-road
miles. Biodiesel can be used to meet
Alternative Fuel Vehicle
requirements of the Energy Policy
Act (EPACT), and it's one of the
most rapidly growing alternative
fuels in the United States. The
National Biodiesel Board offers the
most complete biodiesel Web site in

NASM
was founded in 1974 by Texaco
petroleum marketers as a non-profit
organization, and was expanded to
include marketers of Shell petroleum
products in 1999. As the conversion

evolved into an exclusively Shell
marketer organization. However,
marketers supplied Texaco petroleum

policies of Shell/Motiva; to assure
marketers are provided a fair,
equitable, and competitive market in
which to distribute their products;
to assist Shell/Motiva and their
marketers to grow the Shell brand;
and to facilitate Shell/Motiva being
the supplier of choice of NASM
members.
NASM provides a forum for networking
and solving mutual problems
pertaining to the petroleum/c-store
industry as well as Shell-specific
issues. Continuing professional
assistance and business education is
provided by NASM for its members in
the form of a monthly newsletter,
other written publications,
